General Liability (GL)
Helps protect if your restaurant is legally responsible for bodily injury, property damage, or personal/advertising injury to others.
Claim Scenario: A customer slips on a wet floor near the salad bar, breaks their wrist, and sues for medical bills and pain and suffering.
Business Property (Building & Contents)
Covers the building (if owned) and/or contents like kitchen equipment, furniture, and inventory against covered perils (fire, theft, etc.).
Claim Scenario: A kitchen fire damages your hood system, fryers, walk-in cooler, and dining room furniture. The policy may help repair and replace the damaged property.
Business Income / Extra Expense
Helps replace lost income and pay ongoing expenses if you can’t operate due to a covered property loss.
Claim Scenario: After a kitchen fire, you must close for two months for repairs. Business income coverage may help cover lost profits and ongoing expenses like rent and key staff payroll.
Spoilage / Food Contamination
Helps cover loss of food stock due to spoilage from power outage, equipment breakdown, or certain contamination events.
Claim Scenario: A power outage overnight causes your walk-in refrigerator to fail and spoil all stored meat and produce. This coverage may help replace the spoiled food.
Equipment Breakdown Covers sudden, accidental breakdown of covered equipment (e.g., boiler, walk-in, refrigeration, HVAC), beyond normal wear and tear.
Claim Scenario: Your walk-in cooler’s compressor fails suddenly, damaging the unit and your inventory. Equipment breakdown may help pay for repairs and some related losses, subject to policy terms.
Liquor Liability (if applicable)
Helps protect against claims arising from serving alcohol to someone who later causes injury or damage.
Claim Scenario: A patron is overserved, leaves intoxicated, and causes a car accident. The injured third party sues your restaurant alleging you contributed by serving the patron.
Commercial Auto / Delivery Vehicles Covers vehicles used for catering or delivery for liability and optional physical damage.
Claim Scenario: Your driver rear-ends another vehicle while delivering catering trays. The policy may help cover injuries and damages to the other party.
Hired & Non-Owned Auto Liability
Liability protection when employees use their own or rented vehicles for business purposes.
Claim Scenario: An employee uses their own car to pick up supplies, causes an accident, and your business is named in the lawsuit. This coverage may help protect the business.
Workers’ Compensation
Provides benefits for employees injured while working (medical bills, part of lost wages, etc.).
Claim Scenario: A cook burns their hand with hot oil and needs medical treatment and time off. Workers’ comp may help cover medical costs and a portion of wages.
Employment Practices Liability (EPLI)
Helps protect against certain employee claims such as harassment, discrimination, or wrongful termination.
Claim Scenario: A server claims they were wrongfully terminated and discriminated against and sues the restaurant. EPLI may help with defense costs and possible settlement.
Cyber Liability / Data Breach
Helps with costs if customer data (e.g., credit cards from POS system) is compromised.
Claim Scenario: Your POS system is hacked and credit card data is stolen. Cyber coverage may help pay for notification, credit monitoring, and certain legal expenses.
Crime / Employee Dishonesty
Helps cover certain losses from theft of money or property by employees or others.
Claim Scenario: A manager steals cash deposits over several months. Crime coverage may help reimburse part of the stolen money.
Commercial Umbrella / Excess Liability
Provides extra liability limits above GL, Auto, and Employers Liability.
Claim Scenario: A severe slip-and-fall or liquor liability claim results in a lawsuit that exceeds your GL limit. The umbrella may provide additional protection.
